This roof deck was thoughtfully planned, designed, and built together with the adjoining neighbor in Fairmount. The home is part of a whole block of nearly identical townhomes, each with its own pilot house leading to the roof. The original 150-square-foot deck had seen better days, so we removed it and replaced it with a brand-new, spacious 600-square-foot bi-level deck that completely transforms the rooftop.
To make the space feel both safe and stylish, we extended the parapet walls up to railing height on three sides. On one of these walls, we added beautiful porcelain tile, bringing in color and texture that adds character to the space. Between the posts of the custom pergola, we built a slatted privacy fence, offering just enough seclusion while keeping the deck feeling open and airy.
The pergola itself became a true highlight. Its black-stained frame, connected with sleek steel brackets, pairs beautifully with white beams and battens overhead that filter the sun throughout the day. This mix of light and dark creates contrast and interest, and the shade makes the deck comfortable even on hot summer afternoons.
The two levels help define separate spots for lounging, dining, or entertaining friends, making the deck feel even larger and more versatile. With thoughtful design choices and a blend of modern materials, we turned what was once a small, worn-out rooftop into a warm, welcoming extension of the home.
