This project was in fact our own row home in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. When we moved in, all that existed was a mound of dirt, backfill, old bricks and broken concrete. We spent a couple days hauling out dirt and debris through the alley in a wheelbarrow, until we finally achieved a level surface. We built concrete block garden walls with built-in planters and benches. We then custom-built a fence of 4x4 posts and horizontal 1”x3” pressure treated strips. We spread river rock around the perimeter of the EP Henry Paver patio, enhancing the border and a providing a nice feeling on bare feet. Solar fence lights gave the patio a warm candle-lit glow after sundown. Finally we planted grass seed in the area earmarked (dog-eared?) for our golden retriever Sophie, who came outside right after these photos and promptly did her own grass excavation.
